Those who forsake the law praise the wicked, But such as keep the law contend with them. (Prov. 28:4)
Oh, how convenient it would be to just put the bible aside and live our lives, right? I mean, the bible is just so hostile towards our current way of living! It doesn’t fit in our culture. I can understand the ten commandments–those seem harmless, for the most part–but the rest of the book doesn’t allow people to do what they enjoy. It says that our hearts our deceitfully wicked! It says that there is no one righteous! No, not one! It says that we are all a fallen and corrupt race of people! We should have put this book aside a long time ago. I mean, it even says that there is only one way to get into heaven! One way? How could there be only one way? There are billions of people on the planet with different languages and cultures! Everyone surely must not need to know who Jesus is! And who cares how people behave if they’re not hurting anybody. Let them be gay! Life is too short not to be! But reading this book does the opposite–it makes people angry and upset! And all these religious bigots who won’t stop quoting scripture and pretending as if they have a relationship with God–HA! They are so intolerant! Why would God mind if we enjoy ourselves? And how could a good God send people to hell anyway! God wants us to live our lives! We should just put this book aside! I mean, it was written by man anyway! Let us live our lives!
Evil men do not understand justice,
But those who seek the Lord understand all. (Prov. 28:5)
I can’t stop reading this book! I am but a pilgrim in a strange land! This world is clearly at opposition with the living God. I have to keep His Word in my heart! I can’t put this book down! I constantly need to be transformed by the renewing of my mind. I am a man of unclean thoughts, and I live among a corrupt people! I was born into sin and shaped by my sinful environment! Save me, Jesus! If I don’t stay in this Word, how easily I will be swept away by the doctrines and teachings of this world. How easy it would be to just go with the flow! But sin is sprinkled into everything! And in today’s society almost anything and everything seems to go these days! We seem to have no sense of justice. We continue to war with one another because of our sinful lusts. We continue to ignore all sorts of worldwide evils out of indifference. We continue to do morally suspect things because we are constantly seeking our own selfish interests and gain. Lord, please keep me from the temptations of this world and deliver me from this place, for yours is the Kingdom, yours is the true Power and Glory forever! Amen!
Whoever keeps the law is a discerning son,
But a companion of gluttons shames his father. (Prov. 28:7)
I would go to church this Sunday, but all my friends and colleagues think it’s foolish. They spend their Sundays on the golf course, or at the beach, or on business, or doing something nice for themselves. It is kind of nice to sleep in on Sunday! And my friends won’t let me miss a Saturday night outing anyway, I might as well deal with my hangover at home then try to sit through some long church service. My new girlfriend is very anti-Christian too. I guess she used to be a catholic or something, but she thinks it’s all bogus! You would have thought she knew nothing about the bible though, the way she’s been acting and talking about all these wild ideas to “spice” up our relationship! She’s a lot of fun! My father definitely would not approve. But the bible looks like such a big, boring book! I mean, my old grandmother used to always be reading it, so I know it must be boring! I just need God to set me up on my feet with a better job and deal me a better deck of cards. I pray all the time asking if He would just let me hit the lottery just one time! I promise to give some money to the church and to the poor if God just makes me rich! I am a good person! I deserve to be blessed! Amen!
One who turns away his ear from hearing the law,
Even his prayer is an abomination. (Prov. 28:9)
