Now the mixed multitude who were among them yielded to intense craving; so the children of Israel also wept again and said: “Who will give us meat? We remember the fish which we ate freely in Egypt, the cucumbers, the melons, the leeks, the onions, and the garlic; but now our whole being is dried up; there is nothing at all except this Manna before our eyes!”
How could you remember all the pleasures you had in Egypt but forget the bondage? You don’t remember the beatings and now rejoice that you are free? You don’t remember the hard labor and now sing songs of thanksgiving? Instead, you remember the pleasures and mourn? How could you long for the pleasures of your slavery?
When you were crying out to God all you wanted was freedom. All you wanted was deliverance. And now you want to go back? How could you forget the slavery? How could you despise the Lord? Saying, “Why did we ever come out of Egypt?”
Get away from the mixed multitude. Get away from the wordly people who are not truly after the things of God. You cannot fellowship with them! Get away from Satan and crucify the flesh with its affections and lust. For you are free! Don’t you see that God has delivered you and is with you!
And those pleasures you had were not free! They cost you your soul! Those sensual things that you temporarily enjoyed- they robbed you! They were cheap and left you empty! How could you have forgotten? Oh, it is because of the company you keep, and it is because your heart is still wicked and your mind is still carnal. You still reject the love and power of God who has true pleasures in His right hand and forevermore. You still lack faith.
Repent! Before He slays you in His anger! God has never held anything good back from you! God has never offered you anything less than His best! It is you who settle. It is you who sell yourself cheap. It is you who, like the dogs around you, continually return to your vomit! It is you who choose the curse over the blessing. It is you who refuses to trust God and rejects the land flowing with milk and honey.
Repent! And be delivered from your lusts! And separate yourself from the mixed multitude!
God is in the process of drying these things up in your heart! Embrace the process. Open your eyes and see the beauty of God’s provision! Don’t think on the land you came from! Don’t dwell on old pleasures or else you may have opportunity to return to bondage! Set your heart on the land before you, so that you don’t die in the wilderness!
Loving and trusting God is way more important than your pleasures, for it is God who created you and who created pleasure. So who deserves your craving?
